Cost of Children Failing in Handwriting

Countless students can’t write legibly. What’s more, they find the physical act of handwriting daunting. They’re confused about the process of forming letters. They clutch their pencils so tightly their hands hurt. They get frustrated because they can’t express themselves.

When students get bogged down in the mechanics of writing each letter, how can we expect them to compose sentences, paragraphs, or essays? It is not surprising that students who struggle with handwriting often struggle with other literacy skills. “One of the basic stumbling blocks in writing well in middle and high school is poor penmanship,” says Dr. Margot B. Stein, a pediatric psychologist.

Poor handwriting is costly. Many children are referred to expensive specialists for additional services when handwriting problems exist. Such help is also time consuming. The HWT method teaches children to develop good habits for handwriting at a very young age. Children who have good habits for handwriting develop speed and legibility without additional support help. Thus parents realize significant savings—and result

FAQ

Why is the Handwriting Without Tears® teaching order different? How does it work?

The HWT teaching order is successful because it follows a developmental teaching sequence. We teach easy letters first, beginning with capitals and then teaching letters in groups of similar stroke sequence. When students master easier skills, they are better prepared to learn more difficult groups—those prone to reversals or having diagonal lines. As a result, children gain mastery and confidence more quickly and can focus on the content of their work rather than the mechanics of letter formation. The HWT teaching order results in writing that is fluid, legible, and automatic.
